History of the Firm
Great
Lakes Advisors, Inc. (GLA), based in Chicago, IL, was founded in August,
1990. GLA acts solely as an independent, employee-owned investment
manager and is engaged in multi-product, active asset management. GLA
was previously structured as an investment management group as part of a
bank in the late 1980s. In July, 1987, registration as an investment
adviser was filed with the SEC (file # 801-36915), and on August 1,
1990, this business was purchased from the bank by management and an
amendment to ADV was filed on August 7, 1990, with the SEC. GLA acts
solely as a subchapter S-Corporation investment advisor, has no
affiliate organizations, and has one principal place of business (123
North Wacker Drive, Suite 2350; Chicago, IL 60606).
Great Lakes
Advisors is 100% owned by its current employees. All founding partners
are still employed at Great Lakes. At the present time, Edward Calkins,
CFA, Managing Director and Equity Portfolio Manager and founding partner,
and Stephen Rost, Managing Director and Fixed Income Portfolio Manager and
founding partner, are majority owners of the firm. Tom Kiley joined Great
Lakes in May, 2006, as Managing Director, Business Development and Client
Relations. As Managing Director, Tom has joined the Management Committee
with Ed Calkins and Steve Rost. Tom is a shareholder with the intent to
become an equal equity shareholder with Edward Calkins and Stephen Rost
over time.
Additionally, Wells L. Frice, CFA, Equity Portfolio Manager and Research
Analyst, and Emily Li, CFA, CPA, Fixed Income Portfolio Manager, became
minority shareholders in July of 2004. Catherine A. Kelly, Director of
Sales and Marketing, became a minority shareholder in February of 2002.
Raymond O. Wicklander, Jr., the firm’s third founder, is also a minority
shareholder and is Chairman Emeritus.
